What are the best speakers for a 1965 Fender Pro Reverb?

My “Nonno” (italian for grandfather) has a vintage 1965 pro reverb amp that was professionally restored with new capacitors, etc. but the amp has crappy speakers that I think are from two P.A ststems! What speakers will bring this amp back to sounding like it did in 65? I heard jensen c speakers and Celestion rocket 50’s are great, but were on a tight budget… Any thoughts?

That is a great amp. Black face era Pro Reverb. Everyone is searching for those. Like finding a needle in a haystack. I believe Fender used Jensen speakers in those. Utah would be close in sound to the original. The Celestion Rocket 50s are all right speakers, but not great. They are not close in sound to what came in the Pro Reverb. They are dirt cheap and that is how they will sound.

You have one of Fender’s top amps of all time, put some decent speakers in there. That amp definitely deserves it. The Pro Reverb had two 12 inch 8 ohm speakers so when they were wired the load was 4 ohm. What ever speakers you get, the load when wired together MUST be 4 ohm. You do not want an impedance mismatch with a vintage Fender tube amp. If you do, the amp will be back in the shop to be rebuilt. JBLs are excellent sounding speakers. Fender used those in with the Showman and Dual Showman amps (same branch of the Fender amp family tree as your Pro Reverb). It think Weber has some speakers that are a good match for the vintage Fender sound.

I don’t recall if any Pro Reverb amps came with Utah speakers, but Fender used those in my Bandmaster cab. That is another option.

I will repeat this because it is very important. If you use 2 speakers. Each speaker must be 8 ohms so when wired together the load is 4 ohm. That is an absolute must.
