How do I patch plaster?

I removed an old electric switch box from my wall and replaced it. During the removal a chunk of plaster came with it. Now that the box is installed again and the plate is back on I have a quarter inch hole running down the side of the plate. What is the best way to fix this or can you point me in the right direction?
I should of added that it is plaster board. Don’t know if that makes a difference.

Simplest way is to first spot prime the area then mix patching plaster or plaster of paris. You can fill it in 1 shot, as it starts setting up keep dipping your spackle knife in warm water then smooth over the repair. This should give you a smooth finish.
